MetSatGetter Overview

If, like us, you are avid collectors of EUMETSAT data you will be able to identify with the frustration of having to download many files by hand if you have been away for a day, or missed collecting some for whatever reason, including files that did not get downloaded overnight.

You will also recognise the problem of having to download files at the same time daily, and the problems above when you are called away from the computer or are otherwise engaged.

MetSatGetter will relieve you of all this frustration.

Get it from CNET Download.com! Met Sat Getter Download - Soft-Files.com

With MetSatGetter you can fully automate the downloading of the EUMETSAT files, and can retrieve files you have missed, provided they are still available on the web site. (We have plans to automate this as well)

MetSatGetter will download files at selected times, but there needs to be at least 2 minutes between each download task.

You can also use MetSatGetter to display images from the EUMETSAT site. You are not restricted to 24 max and can download and display all images that are available in a set using the built in image viewer. The viewer allows faster slide changes than are generally available in image viewers and on the EUMETSAT site. Image slides can be changed with timings between 0.1 seconds and 1 minute (this may depend of the actual image size in pixels). This viewer can also be used for your family snaps!

The main point here is that MetSatGetter actually downloads the files to your PC so you can retain them for future reference, unlike some systems which just give you a ‘moving’ 24 hr snapshot.

Which EUMETSAT files can MetSatGetter collect?

We have set up the program to be able to collect any of the file sets that are offered on the EUMETSAT web site as regularly updating sets, however not all sets are included as the visualised products sets from Metosat 0 are quite numerous. The sets handled by the program are:

How often can I get the files?

The images sets provided by EUMETSAT come in options of 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 24 images in each zip file. Generally we recommend that you collect the largest file set as that will put the least amount of traffic the way of the EUMETSAT servers. Since the majority of imagery products are hourly frequency it is only necessary to collect them once a day. A part of the standard set up we allow collections of images on the scheme below:

Frequency of image availability Max number of downloads daily

60 minutes 2
30 minutes 3
15 minutes 5

You can however use the file getter in manual mode if you need an immediate update.

You should always plan your download requirements to put the least amount of stress on the EUMETSAT servers and be considerate of other users of the site. Obviously the ability to download EUMETSAT files depends upon the availability of a reasonable Internet connection. Problems of availability of a connection, or connection configuration problems are not our responsibility. The MetSatGetter program cannot and does not configure / change / amend / delete any connection parameters on your system.

If your connection has bandwidth limits please ensure that your selections in MetSatGetter will not cause you problems in that respect.

The table below gives some samples of the sizes:

Imagery Type Approximate disk space for 24hrs of images

IR 3.9 Full disk (Low resolution) 2.66 Mb (2.71 Mb)
Vis 006 Black & white Western Europe 1.26 Mb (1.3 Mb)
IR 3.9 Colour Western Europe 1.04 Mb (1.09 Mb)
MPE Western Europe 14.8 Mb (15.0 Mb)

The amount of disk space actually used will depend upon your disk format (FAT32/NTFS).

What can I do if some of the images I am collecting are no longer available?

The MetSatGetter program can only collect such images as are available on the EUMETSAT web site. This means that if an image is not in the drop down list of available images, MetSatGetter cannot collect it. The list of available images changes as time progresses. If you require historical data you will need to contact EUMETSAT directly and enquire if such data is available. We cannot guarantee that you will not be charged by EUMETSAT for supplying such data.

What happens if EUMETSAT change something?

>We must point out firstly that we are independent of EUMETSAT and have no control of or insight into their actions. Since we use the program daily ourselves the chances are high that we would detect a change and provided we are able, we will endeavour to provide a fix as soon as possible. We cannot however offer you any guarantee that you will be able to get a certain set of images in perpetuity, nor indeed that you will be able to get any images.

We can offer no warranties and the only promise that we can give on this is that if a change is made to the EUMETSAT site(s) that prevents the MetSatGetter programme from obtaining any images from the EUMETSAT site(s), then we will attempt to fix it, but if EUMETSAT have made it impossible to obtain further images then we will have no liability – infered, implied or otherwise.

What support do you provide?

Every user of MetSatGetter is entitled to unlimited email support. Personal support by telephone or on your site may be available depending on your location, but any such support will be chargeable. You would be notified of potential charges before any work was undertaken.
